DIVIA is a meditative, sound-driven journey through a wounded land—an elemental portrait of Ukraine before, during, and beyond the Russian invasion.
With the onset of military aggression in 2014, followed by Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian environment has undergone catastrophic deterioration. Thousands of kilometers of scorched and mutilated land, forests reduced to ashes, and rivers contaminated with toxins have become a grim reality. Amidst this desolation, countless mined fields still harbor wandering animals.
Divia, an ancient Slavic Goddess of Nature – and all living things – stands in stark opposition to war, destruction, and death.
Divia, the documentary film, unfolds as a metaphysical symphony, without dialogue or narration. It bears witness to the destruction and how nature is resisting and recovering from this aggression. Nature transforms and absorbs the remnants of war, but not without the assistance of caring human hands.
With this film, our goal is to raise the issue of Ukrainian ecology to a global level and start a discourse about the consequences of this aggression in the form of poetic cinema. We cannot neglect Divia and the environmental impact, because it carries a greater threat to our lives than we imagine.
"An immersive, dialogue-free film, it is an impressive endeavour, sure to attract the attention of festivals and maybe even a few distributors"
"This is not just art, but a vital work of documentation, providing clear and unobjectionable evidence of the ongoing ecocide. If the powers that be are ever put to trial, it is important documents like this that will hopefully display just how devastating their campaign of death has been. That day can’t come soon enough. With all respect to the filmmakers, I wish we didn’t need films like this"
"… a stark and necessary reminder that human warfare costs more than just human life… "
"… a powerful, dialogue-free meditation on the often-overlooked impact of war on nature and animals…"
"A picture is worth a thousand words. Ukrainian eco-activist, director, editor and cinematographer Dmytro Hreshko reveals the horrific consequences of the War in Ukraine without saying or writing a single line"
"…this documentary is the most objective look at a war, an invasion, and an extermination on a mass scale"
"Through its eerie silence and breathtaking imagery, Dmytro Hreshko captures the enduring spirit of a land and a people that refuse to be defeated."
"Divia offers a unique perspective on where beauty and devastation coexist. "
